Wired does a little tidbit in their latest issue titled Ecuador Regreens the Galápagos. After touring Ecuador with the Rainforest Alliance, I felt that I was so close that I had to see the Galapagos and popped over for a short visit. I wasn’t going to write about it because Brian covered it last year and, frankly, I felt really guilty about it. But after seeing this in Wired, I felt I had to.

We all know global warming is generally changing the planet for the worse, but the specifics aren’t always on our minds.

You’d have to be living under a rock not to know glaciers and ice caps are melting, and water levels are rising, but did you know <a href="http://www.naturallysavvy.com/naturally-green/climate-chang… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Perched on the east side of the city is this renovated gem at 3602 Apollo.  I saw it a few months ago mid-renovation, and it’s hard to miss: floating entry steps, dark mystical brick, expansive new windows, and a modern cedar fence.  Wow!  The home sits on a corner, and that deck provides captivating views of the surrounding mountains and downtown Salt Lake City.  Plus, it’s for sale.

3602 Apollo is offered at $749,000, which is not a paltry sum, but I imagine you’ll get what you’re paying for.  The home features accents of salvaged pieces, as well as walnut and bamboo in various spots.

The 2,600 square-foot space includes three bedrooms, three bathroom, and a modern poolside cabana with a friendly overhang.  The home also has Bosch appliances and Philippe Starck fixtures and bath.  Future Form Designs poured all the sinks and countertops using concrete and they look pretty sharp.

Interestingly, 3602 Apollo was built in 1957, but how would you ever know?  It’s amazing what you can do with existing structures.

While you may not be as playful with hair color as Dennis Rodman, you love to experiment and change your look now and again (like whenever you’re trying to do a post-disaster-weekend permanent costume change). But we all know that ammonia-based dyes are not something to mess with – take it from Susan Henry, founder of Shades Color Studio in Beverly Hills, CA, who suffered severe ammonia poisoning as a result of her profession as one of Hollywood’s top colorists.

Determined to continue in the field she loved, and determined to find a solution to her debilitating condition, Susan turned to herbs and natural ingredients. After an extensive period of research and kitchen sink experiments, she had developed an all-natural, 100% ammonia-free, natural color process! With celebrity clients flocking into her salon, she also wanted to make sure that the product was widely available to anyone that needed a toxic-free hair color solution – so thankfully for all of us, it can be purchased online for at-home use.

Choose from six rich colors for only $19.95! You can even sign up to become a member of the “Perfect Hair Program” where you’ll be automatically sent your kit each month – don’t worry, you can change your color selection at anytime… now if only a name change were that easy too.

Coolerado-daybreak

About two days after hearing that Coolerado had won the Western Cooling Challenge for the hybrid commercial version of this technology, I saw this on a newly built home.  This is what appears to be the M50 Coolerado.  Coolerado says they have the most efficient air conditioning system made — it uses up to 90% less electricity than a traditional air conditioner, depending on the humidity and elevation above sea level.  High and dry works best; see how:

How-coolerado-works

What’s interesting about Coolerado, particularly if you’re in a location that needs an air conditioner, is the technology doesn’t add humidity to the conditioned air.  It filters and pumps fresh air into your space.  Also, the Coolerado doesn’t use any CFC refrigerants and doesn’t swish around recycled, stale air.

If you’re looking for specific prices, the company tells me that dealers can provide more specific numbers.  Generally speaking, though, the technology is cost competitive with traditional air conditioners, and with the efficiency savings and potential for cheaper installation labor, you might just find that this is a no-brainer.

There’s a solar powered Coolerado that’s just fascinating (see video above).  With the combination of solar power and Coolerado technology, humidified waste air is ducted to the back of solar panels.  The solar panels are cooled, making them more efficient in the process.  The version pictured above has the solar-powered Coolerado with the actual unit semi-shaded on the roof.

So what if organization isn’t your strong suit (you have way more fun than little miss filing system anyway!). But what if you could somehow do a little organization under the guise of creativity? With a set of rebinders from the green office, your constant whistling tune of total chaos may change.

Made of recycled material (a mix of post-industrial and post-consumer), the binders are a great alternative to the conventional vinyl variety. And, they provide a great blank canvas for decoration and collage! So cleaning up all those stacks of paper somehow just turned into an art project – way more appealing.

Additionally, the binders were assembled by Goodwill Industries in the Pacific Northwest, employing jobs to disabled and disadvantaged community members. So helping yourself is helping others as well!
