The Wilson Island group spans 4,700 acres in Lake Superior. It’s a place where peregrine falcons and bald eagles nest in high cliffs, and rare plants like Mountain Fir-moss and Northern Woodsia fern are supported by rare coastal wetlands and forests.
Wouldn’t at least some of the eight islands make a great place for summer homes for big city folks? Don’t worry, the islands have just been protected by The Nature Conservancy in the United States and its counterpart in Canada, in the largest conservation project (dollar-wise) that’s ever bee… Read the full story on TreeHugger

When 163 new species were recently discovered in areas surrounding the Mekong in Southeast Asia, one particular animal caught scientists’ eye. It’s called the Khorat big-mouthed frog–and boasting a set of fangs, a taste for birds, and a bad habit of brawling with other frogs (sometimes even severing each others’ arms and legs), this is one feisty amphibian. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

You’re familiar with “partying like a rock star,” but “go organic and fight hunger like a rock star?” It doesn’t just naturally roll off the tongue… But thanks to the recent combined effort between Pearl Jam and the team at Loomstate, the phrase may soon be catching momentum.
The release of the new Pearl Jam Backspacer album also brings the creation of a 100% organic cotton, limited-edition Pearl Jam Backspacer t-shirt from Loomstate. With front graphics designed by renowned cartoonist Tom Tomorrow, and all proceeds to benefit Feeding America, a leader in domestic hunger-relief, you can be certain these bad boys won’t stay on the shelf for long (plus rumor has it that only 8,000 were produced!).
Look fashionable and fight hunger like a rock star? We’ll dance to that tune.

I love the color and texture going on with this necklace! Created from vintage zippers with metal teeth, this piece is perfect for the gal who loves to sport that unusual funky look.

Salem, Oregon based Ideabox has been creating some buzz lately with their new home design, the Fortino, which will be revealed at the Seattle Home Show 2, October 22-25, 2009, at Qwest Field. After a little coaxing, Ideabox was kind enough to let us see these renderings and a floor plan in anticipation of the big event. Fortino will include 1,250 square-feet of loft-like living shared between two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen, dining room, and living room.
If you’re really chomping at the bit to see the new home design, a partially finished Fortino will be on display Saturday, October 3, 2009, from 11 am to 4 pm, in conjunction with the Salem Green+Solar Home Tour.
Otherwise, we’ll have some additional photos from the Seattle Home Show where Fortino is bound to be a big hit. It’s built with Nichiha and Hardi exterior materials, Higuera vertical bamboo hardwood floors, efficient Kitchenaid appliances, efficient Toto and Kohler fixtures, a tankless water heater, low-VOC paints, a duralast cool roof, Atrium windows, and renewable and recycled content materials.
Like all the other models offered by Ideabox, the company tells me they will sell these at an approachable price. That’s because Ideabox has always been around to create solutions that are green, energy efficient, and attainable — the attainable part being what’s missing in a lot of prefab out there. We’ll have pricing updates soon.
We can’t wait to see the real Fortino … how about you?
Some other Ideabox homes that we’ve featured include the Island Cottage, Confluence Modern, and Port Townsend Confluence Modern.

You already know that we're media sponsors for West Coast Green 2009. If the self-sustaining show home isn't enough to get you out, maybe the living walls or Innovation Pipeline will. Or maybe some of the keynote speakers, such as Ray Anderson, Gavin Newsom, Andrew Winston, or Cameron Sinclair, will get you out. Who knows?! The marketing campaign is in full swing, and we have three more reasons you should register now:
First, at midnight, Friday, September 25, the registration rate pops up to the "at the door" rate. Regardless of when you sign up for the full conference pass, you'll still get the Jetson Green 20% discount, but if you do it today, you get 20% off the early registration price. That's about $160 in savings.
Second, Mayor Gavin Newsom said to come to West Coast Green 2009. It's all about fresh thinking about emerging trends. It's the perfect place for business leaders to come together.
Third, if you sign up using the Jetson Green 20% discount code, you'll be able to bring a friend to the official After Party at the Academy of Sciences for free. That's how we roll.
