In the past year, we’ve discussed over 35 LEED Platinum projects, and they’re all pretty incredible. Some are renovations. Others are new construction. Some are big. Others are small. Some are officially certified. Others are expecting certification. The point is, we’re at the point now where a LEED project is not worth mentioning — typically speaking — unless it’s coming in at the highest level of USGBC certification. Check out the best of the best (click the text links for more images and information).

If you could hold them forever, you would – but when it’s time to offer something second only to your loving arms, rest your little one on a buckwheat baby mat from honeydumplings. Filled with organic buckwheat hulls (a natural material that requires no pesticides or fertilizers), the mat shifts to form around the baby’s shape. There is a light rustling sound from the buckwheat hulls which is actually said to soothe fussy babies – our tester agreed!
The easily moldable mat is covered in a super-soft bamboo case that can be removed for washing. Use as a staple in the baby’s crib or easily roll up and take with you for traveling to ensure for the sweetest of dreams.

In Africa, vultures are facing the threat of extinction from an unlikely source–gamblers who want to smoke their brains. Some people believe that inhaling the smoke from the burning vulture brain will give them insight into the future, which will help them place wiser bets. And, with increased gambling around the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, environmentalist groups fear that the practice may be on the rise…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

If you live in the kind of place where pigeons and robins are pretty much de riguer for bird sightings, then you’re missing out on a whole world of birds that look–well, to be honest, atypical in comparison. Short bodies, huge wings, giant beaks, and rainbows of feathers make these weird and wacky birds must-sees–but since they’re all classified as vulnerable or endangered, you’d better catch these feathered friends while you can…. Imagine make surfboards from a 100% recycled, (and recyclable*) polystyrene foam they call, very informatively, B-XP3. Apparently this particular foam, besides being made as a waterproof extrusion, off-gasses 50% less volatile organic compounds (VOCs), during manufacture, than standard polyurethane (PU) surfboard blanks.
Tagged as Eco Boards, these planks are also laminated with a stretch bamboo cloth, instead of the usual fibreglass…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
